This issue has kept me from engaging for years. Kinja won’t let me log into Jalopnik but it will let me into Oppo. I try logging in by using the Google sign in but nothing happens. In fact, it doesn’t even let me select which account. Does anyone know why this is? The reason w hy I am asking is because I have taken a recent dive into the automotive oddities of the Indian market (strange how I got there from looking at Indian Franken watches). Did you know that not only did Royal Enfield motorcycles and Morris Oxfords survive as zombie products but a lot of German and Italian metal did too ? Some even spanned some hybrid products that shared resemblances with there Western counterparts. One, in particular, that has caught my eye is this odd mini G-wagon/ Defender thing called the Force Gurkha. The amount of information on this model is sparse in comparison to that of say the Mahindra jeeps. So   I thought the new Defender homage article was a perfect place to ask Torch who seems to be thee definitive source on automotive oddities and start engaging again but then this issue reared its ugly head.

Torch is best got ahold of via email. Just today I sent him a deep dive into the mysterious world of “pipe trucks,” whatever they are, since I only know of two. He responded pretty quickly and is going to put together a post about them.

Have you tried navigating to the FP from Oppo? Does it log you out there? Let us know more about Indian market oddities.

My question is...why is this a problem? My recent experience of Jalopnik determined that it was an unreadable and un avigable rabble...which is a bummer.

As far as I know there’s nothing you can really do about the log in issue. It happens to me a lot, I just have a burner and even after succesfully logging in on Jalopnik , when the page reloads I wouldn’t be signed in.

I haven’t been able to log in on Jalopnik in years and have no idea why. It just gets stuck in a loop.

I guess email it is. Whenever I try to go to any other page it logs me out, it looks like Oppo is the only place I can log in.

I wish there was more verfiable information available, Indian automotive culture seems to be in its infancy when compared to where we are. Most of the interest I can gather is on the flood of new vehicles that arrived once they transitioned to a less restrictive market as well as the recent rise in the Indian middle class . Because of this most of the stuff floating on the web is either motorcycles (m akes sense for a country where motorcyling isn’t a hobby but a form of transportation) or about just imitating style trends to some degree. Plus the plethora of languages and the lack of a singular langua franca between the two major geopolitical regions means gathering information on the oddities is hard.

From what I can gather Modern India is the way it is due to many factors but the automotive landscape can be seen to be a result of government influence. Early India’s policies of tarrifs, anticompetitive laws, as well as government operated or subsidized businesses all had a tremendous impact on the reach of the automobile in the subcontinent. What can be seen is a trend of foreign manufacturers entering into partnerships with inexperienced local businesses as a way to gain even a tiny sliver of the market through methods that leave the majority of the means of production in Indian hands. Ultimately this seems to have lead to foreign inte rest waning and leaving the picture but the Indian side still cranking out vehicles. For example, Tata of JLR fame first got into automobiles via a tie-up with Mercedes Benz to produce trucks for the new country. Mercedes licensed the design and left the market for the most part but it looks like Tata continued to produce vehicles. In fact it even looks like they even facelifted the model and put a Cummings in it. Not only that but alot of Tata’s first vehicles seem to imitate the Mercedes a esthetic while still retaining there own identity.

I dunno, feel like each of these automakers have unique story and would be great reading material for people like us. Who knows how much longer some of the less known makes can survive but it would be great to see and study the strange automotive landscape that was India.

I dunno man, I logged back into this account after years of inactivity to maybe see if I could share something interesting with an author. Jalopnik sure has changed alot especially in the last few years. I can’t seem to determine if its a change in writers, commenters, ownership, or all of these that  have contributed to the decline in quality.

Honestly just glad Oppo works, missed this community. All the meaningful discussion happen/happened on here anyway. It feels like Jalopnik comments have really taken a nose dive in recent years but every so often you see something good but Kinjad.

Are you using an iOS device? If so you need to turn off ‘prevent cross site tracking’ in safari’s options.

Hmmm does this apply to Safari on MacOS as well (yes I know its a shitty browser but Keychain Access  only works on it)?

It is surprising how hard it can be to get quality I formation and pictures of stuff tot ally obscure to the English speaking part of the web. Unless you know any of the many languages spoken on the subcontinent, you are left with spotting Google translations. Fascinating.

Kinja is beyond helping.

This would suggest so- worth a shot. I’ve not used desktop safari for years so couldn’t say for certain.

Yup. I only regret it when I see someone sensible being ganged up on by idiots. But I was starting to get worried that some of the trolls would track me down and harass me  elsewhere on the internet so I pretty much stopped commenting anyway.

I had the same problem and this worked for me.  Pretty much allow all tracking/cookies/etc.  Sucks but it works.
